REUTERS/Simon Dawson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - British petrol station operator EG Group will buy Tesla's (TSLA.O) ultra-fast charging units to help roll out its electric vehicle charging network across Europe, it said on Monday. The UK had just over 49,000 public electric vehicle charging devices installed as of Oct. 1, according to government figures. The "open network" Tesla chargers being bought by EG will enable all drivers to access them regardless of the brand of their vehicle, the company added. "The rapid installation of reliable, easy-to-use EV charging infrastructure is the right step towards a sustainable future," Tesla's senior director of Charging Infrastructure, Rebecca Tinucci, said.

CNN —Oil and gas company BP has agreed to purchase $100 million worth of electric vehicle chargers from Tesla. This marks the first time Tesla has ever sold chargers to another company, according to an announcement from BP. BP will begin installing the chargers next year, but no specific number of chargers was mentioned in the announcement. These chargers won’t look like other Tesla chargers, though. BP Pulse, BP’s EV charging business, operates 27,000 charging points currently and has announced plans for rapid expansion.

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - BP's (BP.L) electric vehicle charger unit is ordering $100 million worth of Tesla (TSLA.O) ultra-fast chargers for rollout in the United States, the first deployment of Tesla's chargers on an independent network, the companies said on Thursday. "Selling our fast-charging hardware is a new step for us, and one we're looking to expand," Tesla's senior director for charging infrastructure Rebecca Tinucci said in a statement. "(This) is a major step forward in our ambitions for high speed, open access charging infrastructure in the U.S.," BP Pulse global CEO Richard Bartlett said. The 250 kilowatt BP Pulse-branded chargers will be compatible with both Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors enabling the charging of EV models from other carmakers. Automakers have been moving to adopt Tesla's NACS, taking the Elon Musk-led company's superchargers closer to becoming the industry standard at the expense of the rival CCS.

In 2025, Hyundai will begin providing adapters to owners of older Hyundai models with the Combined Charging System ports their EVs are currently built with. The three South Korean automakers are all part of Hyundai Motor Group, although Hyundai and Kia operate as separate companies in the United States. A major stepThis marks an especially significant development for the Tesla charging system. Counted together, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis would be the second-best-selling EV manufacturer in the United States after Tesla, according to figures from Kelley Blue Book. Having more automakers and charging companies using its standard has been seen as a win for Tesla.

Simply put, America's patchwork of CCS chargers offers spotty coverage, hard-to-use devices, and, too often, chargers that are broken. Not to mention, there are fewer than 12,000 CCS fast chargers across the U.S. today. Opening up the Tesla charging network to our customers, that's about them and it scales very quickly for them. watch nowThe broad uptake of Tesla's charging tech is generally good news. What's more, Tesla's chargers all work the same way, whereas CCS chargers from rival companies may have very different procedures.

Seven automakers plan to build an electric-vehicle charging network to take on Tesla. Seven car companies are making their own charging network to take on Elon Musk's Tesla Superchargers. Tesla, by comparison, has spent over a decade building out a vast network of charging stations specifically for its owners. And that network, which historically only allowed Tesla owners to plug in, has been a huge driver of Tesla sales. It sounds like the planned charging network aims to mimic some of the things Tesla got right, and add some extra conveniences.

Polestar owners in North America will have access to Tesla's charging network starting next year. New Polestar vehicles sold in North America will come standard with the Tesla-designed North American Charging Standard, or NACS, plug starting in 2025. Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in North America use a plug design called CCS, which stands for Combined Charging System. Tesla EVs can use CCS chargers with an adapter, but currently only Tesla EVs can use Tesla chargers. Tesla's plug design was proprietary until November, when the company published the technical details of its system and made it available to other automakers and makers of EV chargers.

Volvo will add the locations of Tesla charging stations to its proprietary app at the same time. Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in the U.S. use a rival plug design, the public-domain Combined Charging System standard. Tesla's NACS charging plug design was proprietary until late last year, when Tesla published the technical details of its system and said anyone could adopt the standard. Several studies have found that CCS charging networks have much lower reliability than Tesla's network. In addition, the CCS fast-charging plug is larger and heavier than Tesla's NACS plug, making it cumbersome for older or disabled drivers to use.

The Tesla Supercharger network could remove the last barrier to EV ownership. Long-standing barriers to EV ownership like battery range and price are finally being addressed, leaving one last obstacle for many would-be EV-owners: access to public fast-charging stations. Tesla has the largest fast-charging network in North America, with about 20,000 Superchargers that previously only connected to Tesla vehicles. A recent study of EV infrastructure done by iSeeCars found that of the 150,000 EV chargers in the US, only about 30,000 are fast chargers (including the Tesla Supercharger network). Only about 11,000 of those fast chargers are non-Tesla chargers so opening up the Supercharger network does make a difference – but doesn't solve the problem.

Rivian said it will start building its R1T pickup and R1S SUV with NACS-style charging ports starting in 2025. While Rivian isn’t nearly as large of an automaker as GM or Ford, it’s reasonably popular among EV buyers, so the move marks a significant step for broader acceptance of the Tesla standard. Tesla’s charging system had been proprietary and only usable by Teslas, although Teslas could use industry standard Combined Charging System (CCS) chargers with an adapter. In recent weeks, Ford and then GM both announced that they would also switch from CCS for EV fast charging to Tesla’s tech. Having more automakers and charging companies using its standard has been seen as a win for Tesla.

A Tesla charging station stands in a parking lot on January 17, 2023 in Springfield, Virginia. But other EV charging companies have, so far, faced a far greater reliability challenge than Tesla’s. It’s an integrated system and has been from the very beginning,” said Jim Burness, chief executive of National Car Charging, a wholesaler of equipment to the EV charging industry. In both cases, drivers will be able to access Tesla chargers without having to use Tesla apps. That could lead to more lines at Tesla chargers, irritating Tesla owners.

Tesla owners have previously enjoyed sole access to the company's charging stations. Tesla owners probably won't be very happy that the EV maker is opening up its Supercharger network to outsiders. Tesla's Supercharger network is comprised of some 7,000 locations in North America, according to the Department of Energy. But allowing other car owners to use the network may also eventually benefit Tesla owners, too. How do you feel about Tesla allowing other EV owners to use the Supercharger network?

Tesla's Supercharger Network will open up to Ford and GM EV owners in 2024. As part of their move, both Detroit-area automakers have decided to adopt Tesla's EV charging connector, the plug that links an electric vehicle to a charging station. With GM and Ford joining Tesla's charging system, the rest of the auto industry may be forced to follow suit. At present, two main types of EV charging plugs exist: Tesla's North American Charging Standard and CCS, used by nearly all other automakers. GM and Ford EV owners also win because they will gain access to double the number of chargers that they had before.

Both Ford and GM EV drivers will, for now, need special adapters to allow their vehicles to use Tesla chargers. Tesla’s charging system had been proprietary and only usable by Teslas – although Teslas could use CCS chargers with an adapter. But CEO Elon Musk announced in late 2022 that he was inviting other automakers and charging companies to use Tesla’s charging system and design standards. Tesla’s NACS chargers outnumber CCS chargers in the United States by a factor of two to one, according to Tesla. Other automakers, such as KIa, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen, still use the CCS charging standard and have not announced any plans to change.

This week, Musk claimed in a tweet that Apple had mostly stopped advertising on the Twitter platform. Apple is not alone in reducing its campaigns on the social media platform since Musk took over. Whether accurate or not, Musk's allegation that Apple has "threatened to withhold" Twitter from its App Store may resonate with other developers. One of the most notable people to switch sides was Doug Field, who started at Apple, joined Tesla and then rejoined Apple. In case anybody missed the reference to Apple's App Store, which Apple maintains as the exclusive way to distribute apps to its devices, Musk then faked a cough and said, "Apple."
Tesla chargers outnumber so-called CCS chargers, the sort used by Ford, General Motors, Audi, Rivian and others, by a factor of two to one, according to Tesla. Now, Tesla has invited other automakers to build cars with charging ports that can work with Tesla’s charging format and for other charging companies, like EVGo, ChargePoint and Electrify America, to add Tesla-style plugs to their chargers. Tesla drivers have long been able to use CCS chargers with a simple adapter that fits over the charging plug. Even Visnic admitted, though, that Tesla chargers tend to be more reliable and easier to use than other public chargers. But charging companies may want to add these cables because it could bring in new customers, said Jim Burness, CEO of National Car Charging, a wholesaler of equipment to the EV charging industry.
Biden praised Musk earlier this month. Samuel Corum/Getty Images, Taylor Hill/Getty ImagesBiden praised Tesla after Musk committed to opening thousands of Tesla chargers to other brands. Previously, Tesla's chargers — which account for a large portion of EV chargers in the US — had been primarily accessible only to Tesla owners. "In building our EV charging network, we have to ensure that as many chargers work for as many drivers as possible," Biden tweeted on February 15. The news came after The Washington Post reported that the White House had come to Musk for help with expanding EV charging infrastructure in the US.
